Abstract

Ahoy! Today I want to share with you about an Abstract.

What is abstract?

Abstract is a brief but complete description of scientific papers containing the problems, objectives, research methods, results, and decisions. Abstracts are written in Indonesian and English, each of not more than 300 words and fitted with 3 main keywords. Abstracts are also usually no more than three paragraphs.

Abstract is the first thing reader see. The writer will get their first impression about their journal or article in abstract. A good abstract most likely means people will want to read the rest of the paper, and it greatly increases the chances of people remembering your paper later on.

In my last post, a journal entitled Technology in Teaching Speaking Skill, has an abstract. I will list the whole abstract below:

Speaking is one of the skills that have to be mastered by students in learning English. Speaking is an essential tool for communicating. In the classroom, improving the speaking abilities of students has always been a concern. In the fast developing 21st century various innovative technologies are being introduced to teach speaking skill in the classrooms. Technology is the vehicle to get access with this modernized world. More than the process of communication, trade and transactions, today technology is widely used in educational sectors. Technological tools have been regarded as ways of helping students improve language skills such as speaking skill. Internet, podcasts, video conferencing, videos and speech recognition software are considered the best tools for teaching speaking skill. This paper aims to discuss some modern technologies available for teachers of English today to enhance speaking skill of second or foreign language learners.

we can find that the writer describes the importance of having the expertise in speaking, then the writer outlines the advantages of using technology to teach speaking skills in the classrooms. the writer describes his explanation of what readers will get in the journal in the fifth sentence. then the writer mentions the supporting tools of learning the skills of speaking with technology. and in the last sentence, the writer writes down the purpose of the journal.

so in the abstract we can already find the author's intent and purpose. we can understand in general what the journal will say. reading abstracts helps the reader to determine a journal that matches what he is looking for. because for that an abstract is created.
